I am officially a pyro(pen) maniac!
Some time ago, a very clever curator encouraged me to explore my new found love of pyrography. I had already made the investment in top of the line tools for all of the projects swimming around in my gloriously busy brain, and still, for whatever reason (reverting to my inner stubborn teen self), I procrastinated and did absolutely NOTHING about it.
UNTIL NOW. Now I cant stop, with five works complete and three in different stages of planning. It is safe to say that I am all in.
What I adore about these works?
These are SLOW going. Its teaching me to be patient and sit in a work, enjoy the the time creating, no matter how long it takes. There is no rushing the mark making using heat on timber boards.
Being out of my comfort zone IS MY COMFORT ZONE. Exploring new styles, mediums and subjects is my way of manufacturing pure joy. Consider me tickled pink!
The CONTROL. By nature I am a very controlled creative, with my usual works in pen being my way of letting go of the control, in a controlled playful way. However, with pyrography, it allows me to lean into the control. Though new and exciting, the challenge of managing the heat, pressure and angle of the pyrography pens on timber, teamed with the focus in the accuracy required in the subjects... well lets just say, the little control freak in me is in heaven!

This new series of pyro Nostalgia works will be launching at the Affordable Art Fair Melbourne with Gallery NWC, 28-31 August 2025.
I would be delighted to see you there, where I will be creating works daily in a pop up studio for the Artist in Action activation.
